The increasing need to get kids to pass a standardized test and to focus on a college degree has most schools sending generations into the real world that lack fundamental life skills acquired in a home economics (home Ec) class.<\/p>\n

The greater ignorance of basic kitchen knowledge, financial sense and interpersonal living skills is setting up kids for failure in the adult world. Home Ec encompasses cooking, child development, education & community awareness, home management, sewing & textiles, budgeting and economics.<\/p>\n

Here are a few basics skills we can utilize over this break to educate our children so they have a more successful foot out the door into adulthood.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Toddlers<\/strong><\/p>\n

• Fold washcloths, pair socks<\/li>\n
• Throw away trash<\/li>\n
• Put toys away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Elementary<\/strong><\/p>\n

  \n
  • Help bake cookies (measurements, mixing, forming)<\/li>\n
  • Help cook dinner<\/li>\n
  • How to use a butter knife and sharp knife<\/li>\n
  • Set the table, clear the table<\/li>\n
  • Sew a button<\/li>\n
  • Plant Herb garden<\/li>\n
  • Fold and put away laundry<\/li>\n
  • Make a grocery list<\/li>\n
  • Wipe down table\/counter correctly<\/li>\n
  • Use a toaster and microwave<\/li>\n
  • Vacuum<\/li>\n
  • Learn to read and write in cursive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Middle\/High school<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Sew a button, Sew a hem, use a sewing machine<\/li>\n
    • Cook two simple meals (pasta, tacos), Fry and boil an egg<\/li>\n
    • Use a toaster, microwave, stove top, and oven (while someone is home)<\/li>\n
    • Bake brownies, learn measuring cups and spoons<\/li>\n
    • Do laundry including iron<\/li>\n
    • Balance a check book (even with online banking)<\/li>\n
    • Make a grocery list with a set budget<\/li>\n
    • Use a hammer<\/li>\n
    • Plant a veggie or herb and maintain the plant<\/li>\n
    • Babysit sibling<\/li>\n
    • Wipe down table\/counter correctly<\/li>\n
    • Clean a bathroom, mop a floor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      These are all basic things your high school child should master before living on their own. You will do them a favor and they are doing you a favor by helping around the house.<\/p>\n
